Being hailed as one of the best animated films of 2018 (and according to the New York Film Critics Circle's awards given out last week, the best animated film of the year), the exuberantly titled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is set to debut in theaters on Friday, December 14th.
A quirky, gleefully oddball take on the Spider-Man mythology, the latest entry in the Marvel superhero canon features an all-star cast voicing what can only be described as different incarnations of the Spider-Man character. There's Shameik Moore as the teenaged Spider-Man, Miles Morales, Jake Johnson as the traditional Spider-Man, Peter Parker, Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir, and even comedian John Mulaney voicing some pig-like creation known as Spider-Ham. That they all exist in different pockets of the (I assume, vast) Spider-Verse makes the film sound like it's both entertaining the audience and winking toward them at the same time. Because what's better than one Spider-Man? Hundreds.
